Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. CARDV is participating in a national effort to raise awareness by educating individuals to identify when teen dating violence is occurring in their own lives, or to someone they know. Dating violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors used to exert power and control over a dating partner. Teen dating violence can occur in all teen relationships regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity or ability. Teens who have experienced teen dating violence are more likely to engage in behavior such as abuse of drugs and alcohol, unhealthy dieting and risky sexual behaviors. Possible warning signs of teen dating violence are a partner checking a survivor's cell phone or email without permission, jealousy, isolating the survivor from friends and family, possessiveness, and controlling what the survivor can do, or who they can talk to.

Part of CARDV’s mission is to provide education and leadership within the community to change the societal conditions that cultivate these forms of violence. This current school year (September-January), CARDV has provided almost 100 presentations to more than 2,500 students in Linn and Benton Counties.

"I didn't know this was a resource for us. I'm so glad you talked to us about this, because it happened to a friend of mine and I didn't who to turn to."
